Under the crafty knife a man is hewn
With every swagger of the Hand that wields
Flesh untorn bares its secrets and tales are strewn
On the rocky gravel lay pieces of being, once integral
A multitude of devices fate bears upon mortals
To fashion the good that is Perfection's essence
Though nature dictates baser avenues and portals
It is the enemy engaged of lifelong turmoil
In pursuit of the Pearl I tread enmeshed
In dagger thorns coiled around mine bleeding heart
Progress encumbered by enamorings of the flesh
Tasked by indwelling deceit, the vanquished
Through the gate of the mind seeps excellence
The virtues of the Ancient, His sweet renown
Whence it trickles and floods affection
And the will commands, consummated obedience
